Finishing Strong

Saturday night was a pretty cool night for me. First off I got to hang out with my wife at her annual holiday get together. She is in property management and once a year the group gets together to celebrate their accomplishments and recognize the top properties with various awards. It was a real fine time and my wife’s property won best of the best. It is a real testament to the hard work and dedication that she and her co-workers put into their job. I am super proud of her.

The second cool aspect of Saturday night was that Charlie Daniels was the entertainment for the party. I’m not a huge country music fan and so I knew going in that I wouldn’t be completely familiar with all the songs Charlie was going to perform. I was pretty confident that I would hear “Devil Went Down to Georgia”, but wasn’t what else. Well let me tell you the Charlie Daniels Band jammed. I was very impressed with the performance. I was more impressed when I figured out that Charlie is 72 years old. Check out the video below for just a small sampling of the performance.

Driving home last night I started to reflect on how impressive Charlie Daniels was. At 72 his voice was in good shape and his musical chops were still sharp. He mentioned at one point that he had been performing for 50 years. It seems to me that when it comes to music Charlie Daniels is finishing strong.

The Apostle Paul also finished strong. In his letter to Timothy he says in 2 Timothy 4:6-8:

6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

I didn’t really anticipate being challenged by seeing Charlie Daniels, but I was. I feel more encouraged today to finish strong. I hope my spiritual voice is in good shape and my spiritutal chops are sharp when I hit 72!

What inspires you to finish strong?

Grace and Peace.

  1. Bro,

I tell you seeing Charlie Daniels jam at his age inspires me in a lot of ways. I am also impressed with how he has been touring with the USO around the world supporting our brave American Soldiers. I also get inspired when I turn back to the Old Testament and read about guys like Noah who was 600 years old when he built the Ark and rode out the flood for 370 days. To top it off he lived for another 350 years after the flood. Let us not forget that at age 500 he fathered Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Genesis 5:32) I also get inspired by how faithful God was to Abraham and even though God put a 120 yr old age limit on man (Genesis 6:3) he let Abraham live to be 175 yrs old and blessed him with Isaac when he was 100. I think I will be very blessed to live half as long as Abraham did. Great post my Brother.

    Love ya

  2. Thank you for supporting me that night. I am so glad I was able to share that night with you. Charlie Daniels was awesome that night and very inspiring to continue through out life the same eachday. He loves what he does and that is so beautiful to find your calling and enjoy what you are doing. Maybe he does not think that he is at the end but just a beautiful place in his life. I enjoy reading your blog for inspiring my creative thinking. I love you

  3. Tony…great thoughts! I’m inspired to finish strong when I read about others who have gone before me and set amazing examples (especially in the Bible). Another favorite author of mine who is currently finishing strong is Gordon MacDonald. “Ordering Your Private World” is near the top as one of my all time favorite books. He also wrote “A Resilient Life.” A great book to help in pondering living a life that reflects God’s glory for the long haul! Check them out if you have a chance. Keep up the good posts. I’m getting “google reader” up and running & adding your blog! Thanks for encouraging me to post!

  4. @Tony Thanks for the shout and for being a part of the blog community. Looking forward to keeping tabs on your blog in the future!
